Dear Sir Thomas,
I am writing to ask if you would be kind enough to let me know what precautions are being taken to safeguard British interests in Shanghai, in view of the recent military developments in China.
My reason for approaching you is that I am the Chairman of the Auto Palace Company of Shanghai, which possesses valuable property in that city. The Auto Palace Company is registered in Hongkong, and I should be most obliged if you would let me know whether any arrange- ments are being made for the protection of such interests, should the Communist forces occupy Shanghai, as this seems to be a possibility during the course of the next few months.
I shall be grateful, therefore, if you would let me have any news regarding this point, or, alternatively, advise me if there is any member of your staff with whom I might perhaps discuss it.
Yours truly,
acarland acout and hial
